About archery in Calgary

Three quite different ranges serve Calgary's archers. The AHEIA Archery Range sits inside an 80-acre conservation centre run by the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors' Association, an outdoor facility offering lessons through a membership structure. For indoor shooting, the city has two commercial options: Archery World in the northeast runs 20, 30, and 40-yard lanes with a 3D section and pro shop, with adult drop-in at $22; Jim-Bows on 46th Avenue NE offers 10 lanes at 20 yards and a pro shop for $14.99 a day.

Archery in Calgary: ranges, lessons and costs

We list three places to shoot in Calgary. Jim-Bows Archery Calgary and Archery World Calgary are indoor ranges in the northeast, and you can walk in at either one without a membership. AHEIA Archery Range is an outdoor range that runs on a $1,600.00 yearly adult membership.

Where Can I Shoot Indoors?

Jim-Bows Archery Calgary, at 620 46 Ave NE #102, has 10 lanes at 20 yards, plus 3D targets. Its full pro shop carries recurve, compound and traditional gear. Hours run Tuesday to Friday from 10 AM to 8 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM.

Archery World Calgary, at 3420 12th St NE #106, has lanes at 20, 30 and 40 yards, plus 3D targets, so it suits an archer who wants more distance than a short indoor lane. You can rent equipment there. The doors are open Monday to Friday from 10 AM to 9 PM and on weekends from 10 AM to 6 PM.

What Does A Visit Cost?

A drop-in visit at Jim-Bows costs $14.99 for an adult or $9.99 for a youth. At Archery World, an adult pays $22 and a youth aged 17 or under pays $15. Neither indoor range asks you to join. The drop-in price is the whole cost of shooting, unless you need to rent a bow. AHEIA does not sell drop-in visits.

What Do Lessons Cost?

A lesson costs $60 at both indoor ranges, but the fine print is different. At Jim-Bows, the lesson is $60 per person. If you do not own a bow, recurve rental adds $30, so a first lesson with rented gear costs $90. At Archery World, an individual lesson is $60, and its own listing says equipment is included if you need it. That can change your total by $30, so ask when you book. Both ranges run lessons for all skill levels.

Is There An Outdoor Range?

Yes, there is one. AHEIA Archery Range is at 242 Avenue and 32 Street SW. It is an 80-acre outdoor range inside a conservation centre, and the Alberta Hunter Education Instructors' Association runs it. It welcomes all bow types and offers lessons at every skill level. A one-year adult membership costs $1,600.00. There is no drop-in rate and no pro shop.

Hunter education comes first there, and archery comes second. The same page that lists the fee also mentions free firearm rentals. Our record does not break the fee down by activity, so call to ask what it covers for archery.

Which One Should I Choose?

For a first visit with no strings, pick Jim-Bows for the lower price or Archery World for the longer lanes. Archery World also stays open later on weeknights, and it is open both weekend days. That helps if you shoot after work. AHEIA is the route if you want hunter education along with your archery, but you pay for a full year before your first shot.
