About archery in Vancouver

Vancouver's two indoor ranges serve quite different communities. Lykopis Archery is a boutique studio dedicated to traditional and historical shooting styles, including longbow, recurve, and historical forms, with a shop open most weekdays and open-range sessions on Friday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at $25 with your own equipment. UBC Archers operate a campus range at Osborne Gym on Monday evenings from 5 to 7 PM during winter academic terms, open to students, alumni, and community members at $65 per season or $15 for a single drop-in.

Archery in Vancouver: ranges, lessons and costs

We list two places to shoot in Vancouver, and they could hardly be more different. UBC Archers is a school club that anyone in town can join for a fee each term. Lykopis Archery is a small school that teaches old styles of archery, the kind people shot long ago. Both places shoot indoors.

Can Anyone Shoot At UBC Archers?

Yes, anyone can. UBC Archers is open to students, past students and people from the community. If you are not a member, you can drop in for $15.

The club shoots indoors at the Osborne Building, 6108 Thunderbird Boulevard, on the UBC campus. Sessions run on Mondays from 5 to 7 PM during winter terms. Because the club follows the school year, it does not run all year round.

Membership costs $60 per semester for UBC students and staff, or $65 for everyone else. A term runs from September to January or from January to April. The club gives you a bow to use, and a beginner lesson comes with the fee.

What Does Lykopis Archery Offer?

Lykopis Archery is at 2180 Main St. It teaches the longbow, the recurve and old styles of shooting. It is the only place like it that we list in the city, and you do not need to join.

Drop-in costs $25 including tax if you bring your own equipment, or $35 including tax with rental gear. Punch cards are available for repeat visits, and there is a pro shop. Lykopis keeps regular hours on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Fridays it also runs an Open Range session from 6:30 to 8:30 PM.

How Do Lessons Work?

The two ranges sell lessons in different ways. At UBC Archers, the lesson is part of the membership and is not sold on its own. Every archer must take a beginner lesson at range time, or show enough skill, before they keep using the range. The $15 drop-in lets you try one session first, so ask the club whether a drop-in includes any teaching.

At Lykopis, lessons are their own product. A group intro session costs $140 per person for two hours, and that is where most first-timers start. A private lesson costs $160 plus tax for one person, or $310 plus tax for two.

Which Costs Less?

The cheapest single try in the city is $15 at UBC Archers. It is also the hardest to fit in, since it only runs on Monday nights in winter terms. At UBC, four drop-in visits cost $60, which is the same as a full semester for a student. If you will go more than four times, the membership costs less, and it adds beginner lessons and equipment.

Which One Should I Choose?

Choose UBC Archers for low-cost target archery, especially if you have any tie to UBC. The semester fee gets you lessons and range time together.

Choose Lykopis if old styles of archery are what drew you in. Book the two-hour group intro and go from there. Its weekly hours and Friday Open Range also give you a steadier way to shoot without joining anything.
